To unite all military forces of the U.S., the Secretary of Defense declared the foundation of an Armed Forced Day on the 31st of August, 1949. It was Louis Johnson who united previously separated the Armed Forces such as Army, Navy and Air Forces not only under the single day of celebration but also under one department of government. Later, on the 27th of February, 1950 the president Harry Truman established the first leading off the Armed Forced Day on the 20th of May and gave the theme – “Teamed for Defense”.

For the first time, it was an unusual celebration, when citizens showed their appreciation to soldiers of U.S. army. Since 1961, this holiday became national and held on the third Saturday of every May. Usually, this day celebrated with various military displays, parades, air shows, ship and base tour, receptions, etc. But the true sense of this great day is to pay gratitude to those who give their life for peace and freedom of American nation.

The best way to honor any veterans is to spend time together, to invite for dinner or simply to send a cake with a postcard. All need to understand that militaries rightly need and deserve the support of their friends and families.
